What does the theatrical forms, such as opera and puppet theatre belonging to the various Hokkien (Minnan) communities in Kinmen, Taiwan and Singapore have in common? These sites are connected by maritime networks, first denoted by their ancestors from south Fujian who relied on the maritime world both for survival and maintain contacts with compatriots and relatives based abroad when local means of living was no longer sustainable. This book adopts an “Across the Seas” concept, focusing on the socio-cultural interaction of the Hokkien communities in China and the surrounding region. The fluidity of interaction allows for the transmission of theatrical forms to spread across these ‘land-bounded’ societies and share a common language
and culture. Attention is also paid to the localization of theatrical forms that are shaped by socio-political factors of the host societies.
