Glove puppet theatre, also known as potehi, originated in the south of Fujian province, China. Its popularity was evident in the widespread transmission to Taiwan and Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Chia's chapter covers the development of potehi in Singapore from the late nineteenth century up to the present day. Besides addressing how sociopolitical factors affect puppet theatre, Chia also documents how this puppet form went through a dramatic change, from its site of origin in south
Fujian to influence from Gezai opera in Taiwan that transformed its music, performance and rituals.
